Caroline Shaw's Partita for 8 Voices
This Roomful of Teeth performance is amazing. If you don't love it at first, hang on for a few more minutes and you might be surprised.
Ben Folds/Kennedy Center Collaboration
I love basically anything Ben Folds does in any realm of the musical world. This is pretty amazing. He also has had an active YouTube channel that was a wonderful respite at my house during the quarantine.
Rufus Wainright: Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk
One of my favorite songs. I made a mix CD when I was in college that had a version of this with an out-of-tune acoustic piano and I've been on a quest for that version for quite some time. Something about the honky-tonky feeling of a piano in need of tuning makes me smile. The Beatles' Honey Pie also features a similar sound.
Keep Going Song
This is exactly the cathartic piece I needed. I saw the Bengsons in their show Hundred Days a couple of years ago and was struck by the raw emotion Abigail exudes. This is gentler than some of the songs from the show but no less powerful.
Mandolin Orange
I'm always excited to learn about new (or new-to-me) music, especially when I'm least expecting it. When I walked in for a string methods class I teach, a student was playing a beautiful and simple melody on his violin. It turned out he was trying to figure out a melody by this wonderful and well-named group: Mandolin Orange.
I missed the November deadline for this little gem, but am very excited for the December installment. This project promises visual and performance art (hence me filing this under "music") directly sent to your email inbox each month. There are multiple subscription levels.
1/28/2021: I did, in fact, get the November installment so am now 3 months in and am just as excited about this as I was in November.
